Get It While You Can (A Butterfly in New York)

New York in mid-September can be a bit chilly; particularly in the shade. The parks are usually quite sunny, and on some days one can be comfortable wearing a T-shirt. The morning of September 11, 2001 was unusually warm. My fellow sidewalk booksellers and I were out in full force, with our best merchandise, on the nicest day we had seen since graduation. We provided excellent books at a price that left the students with some money left over for beer or cell phone bills. We sold dangerous literature: Ken Kesey, Leonard Cohen, Richard Brautigan, Jack Kerouac, Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Timothy Leary, Eastern Philosophy, and maybe something off the wall like " Marvin the Farting Dog." We had lengthy discussions about who would come earliest to secure the best spot on the block. Our concerns were that we can exercise our first amendment rights without harassment from some self-proclaimed authority figure, and that it would not rain. The New York University Administr...

The F Word

"Woman, weep not for me, but for yourselves and your children"  ... Jesus Christ It has become socially acceptable to casually refer to the fairer sex as females, yet girl, woman, baby, chick, and other practical and endearing terms are now considered sexist and should be avoided. Girls are young women, baby is someone who is loved, and chicks are cute. They go to great lengths to be young, loved, and cute, so what is the problem? Women is now spelled wymyn. Ladies is still acceptable, but I do not see it as applicable in many cases. I have noticed that men today refer to their significant others as 'my female.' Your female what? The only thing missing is the grunt, the dinosaur bone, and the blueprint for the wheel. I doubt that "Good evening female, would you like to accompany me to a Spice Females concert?" is going to guarantee anyone a date. He will probably go home alone and watch Wonder Female, The Bionic Female, and Cat Female on television. As human...

The Silent Boy

In a hospital in New York City, a baby boy was struggling to enter the world. The only tool the doctors had to assist him was a pair of forceps. They were clamped to his head, and he was pulled out of his mother's birth canal. He was a handsome boy, perfectly formed. His parents were proud. He cried and cooed and laughed, just like any baby would. Most children would start pronouncing words by the age of two or three, but this child was silent. He was not deaf or mute; he was not anti-social. No, he was a most sociable little fellow. He enjoyed playing with his aunts, uncles, and little cousins. He was not autistic, he was just quiet. No one thought much about it, and there did not seem to be much cause for concern. After all, a quiet child is usually preferable to a noisy one. He was loved and catered to by the ever present adults, whose only communication with him was the occasional "Mira, how cute" and "ay, pobrecito." Except for a few cousins who were arou...
