When I saw the ad on Craigslist for this job, I called the number. Their lies began with this first phone call. I was going to need a job because I knew that I was going to be evicted from my apartment where I lived for ten years, and I needed to build up my bank account for the moving expenses. When I asked David for the name of the company, he replied, 'Manhattan Safety'. That was bullshit. I already knew the name of the company, Manhattan Fire and Safety Inc. after I hung up the call, I looked at Google and Yelp reviews for this company. The reviews ranged from annoyed to horrible. That's why he didn't give me the full name of the company. He is so desperate for employees that he has to lie to them. Under normal circumstances, I would not work for a company with such a bad reputation, but desperate times called for desperate measures. When I arrived for the interview, he was very friendly, well-spoken and seemed like a good and honest gentleman. The first thing he said to me at the beginning of the interview was, "Because the law requires it, I HAVE to pay you 15.00 an hour." Before he continued, all respect for him that he might have earned from me went right out the window. I had just spent six years before the pandemic working for a union working for worker's rights, improved working conditions and the 15.00 an hour minimum wage, The Fight For 15. I was insulted. I took the job because I had to. I've never had to do that before.
