In the 1970's and 80's, Ybor City

In the 1970's and 80's, Ybor City had a very lively and rich music and art scene. Piano player and showman extraordinaire, Rev. Ralph was playing music by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, and Leon Russell on a small stage that was built specifically for him and his baby grand above the entrance door at Carmine's Restaurant. Cosmic Dave was going around with his 3-string guitar living vicariously through Bob Dylan and Keith Richard. Other notables included Rocky Kester, the neighborhood potter, tile artist Richard Sorrentino, Ron Britt who was conducting the Saturday Night Jam in his storefront on 7th Avenue, and the Playmakers who occupied the historic Cuban Club, presented musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Company, and Promenade as well as comedy and drama in the Cuban Club's theater. Zenith Nadir was the top punk band in the city, and White Witch wound down their career after two amazing albums. Steve Martin, the singer from The Left Banke who had a ...

Holidazed

Holidays are good opportunities to rest, spend time with our families, and celebrate the victories and milestones of our species. Many American holidays usually have no relevance to the heritages of many of our citizens, yet they feel obligated to participate. Now before I am perceived as an ungrateful, atheistic, unpatriotic, cynical party-pooper, let me say that I enjoy giving and receiving cards and gifts on birthdays and gift-giving holidays, Thanksgiving dinners, New Years Eve parties, fireworks, parades, and when I was a kid, trick-or-treating and Easter baskets. My new year begins on my birthday, which falls around Labor Day, and I am usually working on that day. For some, the new year begins on April 15th. Why is Columbus Day an American holiday? He was an Italian who worked for Spain, so it should be a holiday for Italy and Spain. They are the ones who profited from his conquests. He didn’t discover anything anyway. He only made it to Puerto Rico and there were already peop...

(We Don’t Have To) Cry For The Children

Sometimes these days we think about the things we took for granted In times like this we can take all that we’ve learned tend to seeds we planted Watch them grow help them grow there’s no room for sorrow Today may be tough, we’ll look back tomorrow...and we’ll know Yes we’ll know we don’t have to cry for the children Their future like the sun in the sky is shining bright We don’t have to cry for the children Let’s put our arms around them assure them it’s alright Kids today not like we were yesterday they never are (they never are) Today is unlike any other day it’s so far from what we knew once as another day Times have changed it’s time to rearrange the way we treat each other Today may be tough, we can go much farther if we know Yes we know we don’t have to cry for the children Their future like the sun in the sky is shining brighter We don’t have to cry for the children Let’s put our trust in them and watch them as they grow ...
