What African-American Youth Are Not Learning

They know nothing about Gospel Music, Blues, Jazz, Rock and Roll...or how and why they are able to afford the equipment and the training that they need to become millionaires making shitty rap records. They know nothing about Mahalia Jackson, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte. Bill Cosby, Lola Falana, Sammy Davis Jr., The Supremes, The Temptations, Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and the endless list of other brilliant entertainment luminaries who fought racism and discrimination to become wealthy and  respected in their fields.

Do they know about great military and political leaders and social activists who have made a difference like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks, Booker T. Washington,  Medgar Evers, Shirley Chisolm, Angela Davis, Colin Powell, Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Susan Rice who have schools, streets, holidays and monuments named in their honor?

Do they know about great celebrated authors like Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Zora Neal Hurston, Maya Angelou, Richard Wright, Alice Walker, Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Octavia E, Butler, Gloria Naylor, Alex Haley, August Wilson, W.E.B. Du Boise and other great literary minds who wrote about the struggles of being black in America and how they overcame and triumphed?

Do they know about great athletes like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Rosie Grier, Jackie Robinson, Willy Mays, Lou Alcindor, yes, even O.J. Simpson and all of the great African- American athletes past and present who have played for all of America's famous ball clubs and became millionaires?

Do they know about the United Negro College Fund? The Civil Rights Act of 1965? Laws and protections that have been put into place to prevent discrimination in the workplace and in the courts?
