My co-worker couldn’t make it in to work today. She’s having car trouble. It’s also raining; actually, it’s pouring! Luckily, I live close to work and have the luxury of being able to walk to work. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s raining. I have an umbrella. I’ve noticed that lots of people have car trouble when it’s raining. It’s an interesting phenomenon. I’ve known lots of people who can’t seem to make it to work because it’s raining. The car won’t start for some reason. Maybe there’s a leak in the hood and the engine got wet. Appointments are missed and dates get stood up. It’s amazing. How much does a car cost? I guess it’s better to stay home when it’s raining than it is to have to drive in it.
Most cities have more than adequate public transportation; some transportation systems can be more trouble than they’re worth. The latter best describes the transportation in the city where I live. That’s why I like to work and play locally. Unless one lives in a city like New York where most bus stops have shelters, or the subway can provide protection from inclement weather, or a cab ride uptown can cost as little as five or ten dollars, one needs a car or an umbrella.
Umbrellas are a great little invention. They usually range in price from one dollar up to ten or twenty dollars for some of the larger ones with the special features. It is believed that carrying an umbrella in a thunderstorm increases one’s chance, even if only slightly of getting struck by lightning. So if one is standing at a bus stop with an umbrella, there’s a slight chance that one could wind up in an ambulance instead of on a bus. It’s probably a good thing that most ambulances are in good working order most of the time; even if it’s raining.
An ambulance can get a person somewhere in minutes as opposed to the two to four hours it can take for the same trip on a bus. The bus may not always be quick or convenient, but it usually comes at the same time everyday.
I don’t own a car right now. I do however; have an umbrella and a bus pass. It’s not likely that I’ll have car trouble any time soon so I’ll always be able to get to where I need to go even if it’s raining.
