There isn't really a standard, but normally it takes somewhere between 2 to 8 hrs. to mix a song depending on number of tracks, song length, number of takes and overdubs, style, effects used, complexity, edits, and whether auto-tune and beat correction are used, etc

I totally relate to that.. But, from what I've seen, many semi pro projects by relative new comers seem to have little trouble raising the money they need quite quickly. I think based on the songs already completed, it could be quite successful assuming there is enough promotion and exposure.

Step by step... I'll listen soon. Manic energy has kept me up far too late. Today was a bit crazy. I was supposed to rehearse with Jim Knable and the Fireplaces today and play a show in Brooklyn tomorrow and it all got cancelled due to covid. A longtime friend needed some serious consoling and reassurance that they don't suck because a band member unexpectedly quit without giving any reason. Sue is freaking out about Omicron and the upcoming shows I have. Part of myfamily is ar my mom's in CT and I'm feelling a bit bad about not being able to go yet, but will early next week. Probably will be off social media for most of the time after I get there. Going to brainstorm a bit on who to send the songs to after they're mixed. I do have connections to some very high profile audio/music people, but not the ones who write the checks, unfortunately. Things aren't like they used to be in the 90's or early 2000's. Everything changed after Naptster, mp3's and music downloading. I worked at Sony Studios when all that went down. Management knew what was coming. They, especially middle management at 550 couldn't stop it and refused to adapt quickly. Hard to change when the gravy train has been so good. The necessary changes would have required severe austerity and pay cuts for everyone. I was making the best money I had up to that point and was in the IBEW union as were all the techs, staff engineers and assistant engineers. Howard Rappaport, the Sound guy at Arleens also worked their at the time. We refused to take cuts unless management did, which of course did not happen. Apple ended up eating Sony's lunch. I was a bit of a pain in the ass to management there because I hate cutting corners. Some of my fellow tech's called me a rogue tech because I sometimes did stuff without proper authorization to get shit done and make sessions happen without problems. That job really gave me thick skin for my next really hard job which was managing Kampo Studios and Cultural Center. Which was on Bond St. near The Bowery Electric... I was just chatting on FB with the VP, of Kampo, Yuri Harada (Tara on FB). Yuri is a saint and one of the nicest, most generous people I know. She takes care of a herd of about 30+ feral cats in her Kyoto neighborhood even taking the sick ones to the vet when possible. I recorded over 51 songs starting in 1993 with her late husband and the President/owner of Kampo, Shokei Harada. Shokei was also one of the nicest, most talented, generous, and spiritual people I've worked with. He came to NY and saw me play with Val not too long before he passed. He liked Val and called her my punk sister. Yuri still lives in Kyoto and runs the family publishing business there. Shokei's father was a rock star of calligraphy in the 70's traveling worldwide and meeting world leaders. Kampo founded the cultural center in 1985 to promote world peace and reconciliation between the US and Japan as a result of WWII. I will be visiting Yuri and family again next year when the pandemic ends. I became part of their family after Shokei died from cancer a few years ago. It was his wish. Writing all this because most of you don't really know my history.Hope I didn't bore you too much.

Hey Hey Ray ... I got home from listening to the Beatles' Get Back part three at John Richards house... I loved it !!
I found this Fresh Boy mix and just listened four times at 3 am... oh my my my ...!! I had my socks blown off with each listen, I had to put them back on each time! There are so many cylinders firing on this track ..!!! It sounds great in my ear buds on my iPhone... oh my my... ❤️🎸🎤🥁❤️... I'm going to take two aspirins now and listen again in the morning!!!

I love your enthusiasm, Rick! I jus got a job working at testing sites in NYC. I will be working 12 hour days 7 days a week for at least a month, so I will not be focusing on recording or rehearsals until feb or march. Ray- Reminding me of problems with the first Fresh Boy "final mix". Things too blended together without enough hierarchy and dynamics. Things confusing at start. Bass drum a bit heavy but snare and cymbals seem missing, Your vocal needs to be higher. Can barely make out backing vocals. Neeeds more of an approach like what became the Fresh Boy final mix.

You can book directly with the owner, if you want, for a better financial deal. Steve gets a cut of the bar proceeds as do all promoters. Why would one go through the torture of band wrangling without getting paid? Steve promotes of course, and he does have a following. This applies to all the venues. Generally, I think it is best to book directly with the owners, not an intermediary, if you want to make the most possible money. If it were me, I'd see if they'll give you the whole night and choose the other bands, or, if you decide to go with Steve, make sure we get a prime slot (10 pm) with somewhat similar bands.

I've been having having a hard time trying to shake it off.

It was a weird conversation. Every time I said something or asked a question, all he would say is, "It's my show. I've been doing it for a long time." That's all he said repeatedly. It was like listening to a broken record. It had me questioning my own mental health.

Jerry goes back decades on the NY club scene. Does a toys for Tots Christmas benefit every year and a few other shows. He has a few bands that play most of his shows and he sometimes mixes in new ones. I personally think you are better at Parkside than bitter end because of bands and audience. Parkside has developed into a place where most of the people playing with you have been performing and has been drawing these people and their friends.

I've known Jerry since the mid-90's when he was at Kenny's Castaways and I had my bookstore on Thompson St. He offered The Offenderz a show at Bitter End, but we didn't do it because I got the gig and not Sid. I believe I mentioned that he heard some of the tracks like Fresh Boy, he liked them and offered us a show based on that. I've played at Parkside four times. Steve would gladly give me a spot I'm sure. The point is the he OFFERED a show and then acted as if I was trying to take something from him. The spooky part is how he kept repeating the same thing like a robot on repeat.

Yes, because Jerry is a nice guy but he may have been caught up in whatever he was doing. At Parkside you have a couple of options with either Steve Krebs or Elbaum/Tanner. Both know most members of your band well and have played their shows. Krebs is pass the bucket and Elbaum/Tanner is usually $10 cover.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for your great work on these recordings. It is awesome, and as they continue to be mixed and mastered, they sound better. It could be a real treat for some to have all of these musicians on the same stage performing these songs, and it would be a great honor for me...at least I could leave this planet feeling like I was a part of something special and worthwhile. I'll leave it at that. It's not meant to be, but we leave these recordings to the world. It might take 50 years, but one day someone will appreciate and enjoy them.

You could have a long set for album and then your performers could have their bands play. Keeps it in the family. If you did a Jerry Adams show at Bitter End, your band would be alone among other bands with no connection to you.

Right now they are fighting allegations they are in cahoots with Russian government. The music scammers who say they can help you have standard type messages that say they've listened to your songs and think they are great.

The only other option for radio promo is college stations and independents. This requires some research on how to submit to them so your music will be heard. Some want physical media, some want media files sent to them, some want a link, etc. There is a good long article on this subject posted on the web by a guy from a college/indy radio station from the northwest. If you search Google diligently, you'll find it. Before you do any of this you must have a written bio/press release about your music, your copyrights, and performing rights affiliations (BMI ASCAP), etc. taken care of. You also need a record label, either your own self created one, or an established entity.

Yes but to chart with success you need a radio servicer and publicist that’s hooked up. That costs around $5000 per campaign. Getting results on NPR too 10 takes that level of connection. Heavy Rotation. Light or medium rotatatiin won’t carry any weight for festivals and larger venues.

Yes. The indy route I talked about is very hard to do on your own. It generally requires hiring a pro because very few can do it. I think Cyndi Dawson has been fairly successful promoting The Cynz using the self promo methods I described, but to get real traction pro's are necessary. Before doing that, maybe run some focus groups to find out what song(s) are likely to get the most interest, plays etc., and then pick the one(s) to push .

I wouldn't give up on promoting this Ray!!! At the very least you need to submit to record labels, but you must have your write up etc. in order to submit something they'll pay attention to. When I managed Kampo Studios I got approximately 100 unsolicited submissions over 5 years from musicians, bands etc looking for work, deals etc. I was unable to help them and didn't even have the time to review. I sometimes if they looked good, I passed them off to other staff.

I got this mix of Thousands Of Years from Nicola today. It is in my opinion, gorgeous. Seaton's sax is probably some of the greatest sax work ever recorded. There will be two official versions of this song. The reason is that Mac's trumpet solo was also so fantastic, but the sax and trumpet solos at the end didn't work very well together, so there will be one featuring Seaton and one featuring Mac. Here is the one with Seaton's solo. Thanks, man...beautiful work! I'll post Mac's as soon as I get it.

Mick Oakleaf: One thing you could do is have a listening party at a club like Parkside or anywhere. These were common among A&R, and music industry people at one time, though usually private. Bands have often had them to promote their new recordings to the music industry and public.
